AgustaWestland

It's quite an amazing sight to see thousands of cables being woven onto a loom the exact shape of the inside of a helicopter. Until you see one being constructed you have no idea just how complex a military spec helicopter is.

And that’s the problem. There are several applications available to help you find the best route for the various cables and the best overhaul layout but it turns out for one reason or another accuracy is always an issue. For AgustaWestland’s though, this is not the case as they run a VAX based application improved upon again and again for many years to the point that it is far more accurate than its competition. It does have one Achilles heal though, and that is it takes all weekend to work out a new loom, meaning any design changes have to be accumulated over the week and applied each weekend.

Migration came to the rescue here, primarily on speed alone. The emulated VAX is so much faster than the original. The loom calculations only take a few hours rather than days and can even be run during production, meaning change updates take a maximum of 24 hours to apply. So successful has the migration been, Westland are now exporting the technology to others, bucking the trend to turn VMS off.
